Try these five tips for portion control using your FoodSaver® Vacuum Sealer.

• Make small lifestyle changes you can live with.We’re all busy and often eat meals outside the home. To avoid having to grab an unhealthy option when you’re on the go, try vacuum sealing healthy snacks in smaller portion sizes and slipping them into your bag or briefcase before you head out to the office or on errands.
• Plan ahead.After getting groceries home and before putting the food away in the refrigerator or freezer, try taking a few extra minutes to portion out snacks and plan meals for later. Vacuum package and seal so that you don’t reach for “a little extra” of this or that when preparing your next meal. Take this a step further by cooking right-sized meals in advance and freezing them so that you don’t have to get out the measuring cups the next time you crave pasta for dinner.
• Don’t eat directly out of a bag or container.Plate your food so you’re forced to see how much you’re eating. More importantly, once you open a bag of nibble food such as pretzels or chips, portion it out into single servings and vacuum seal in separate bags. Vacuum sealing will keep it fresh for later. If the label says 10 servings per container, use 10 bags.
• Keep fresh low calorie foods on hand.Vacuum sealers keep food fresher up to five times longer, meaning good-for-you snacks like fresh fruits and veggies will stay fresher in the refrigerator so that you always have good snacks at the ready.
• Control your cravings, control your weight. We often cheat on diets for psychological reason, not just hunger. Vacuum seal the foods you’re most likely to over indulge on so that you have to take the extra step of opening the bag to satisfy your craving.

Here are some more tips:

1. Create custom-sized bags for small portions of meat, poultry and fish or vegetables and fruit of all sizes.
2. Divide large entrees into serving-size portions and only thaw and heat the minimum amount you need, to avoid the temptation to eat more.
